— ABOUTKevin
Mullins
Documentary photographer.
Educator. Based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire.
Kevin has spent almost two decades making honest, unposed photographs of people on their most important days and, more recently, teaching other photographers how to do the same.
He came to it the long way round: via Wales, a career in IT, and self-teaching himself how to spot a moment.
Unfortunately, his father did not have an old film camera, which he had been fascinated by as a young child.
But both his parents have a thirst for curiosity, which drives his storytelling photography of everyday life and the world we live in.
— The storyIn the beginning..
Kevin photographed his first wedding in 2008. He had an instinctive interest in how things actually look at weddings, rather than a fairy-tale version of them.
Documentary photography, with its roots in photojournalism and the idea of bearing witness rather than directing, turned out to be the right message for Kevin.
Once he found it, there was no turning back.
Over 800 weddings later, that approach has not changed. The venues have varied, from intimate home ceremonies to multi-day celebrations at large country houses and châteaux across Europe.
The equipment has evolved. The instincts have sharpened along with the eyebrows.
The core idea remains exactly what it was in 2008: get close enough to tell the real story, and quiet enough that people stop noticing you're there.
Kevin being interviewed in Tokyo, Japan
— The Fujifilm chapterFirst invited to Tokyo in 2013.
In 2013, Fujifilm invited Kevin to become their first-ever wedding photography X-Photographer ambassador. It was an honour he hadn't expected and didn't take lightly.
Fujifilm cameras had already become the tool he trusted most for the kind of unobtrusive, available-light work he wanted to make.
Not long after, he was invited to Tokyo for the inaugural X-Photographers meetings — a conversation about the future of the X-Series alongside photographers including Zack Arias, David Hobby, and Bert Stephani. He has returned to Japan several times since.
In January 2018, 20 of his black-and-white wedding images were exhibited at Fujifilm's headquarters in Tokyo — a solo exhibition that ran for 2 months. It was one of the stranger and more surreal moments of his career: his photographs of English weddings, on the walls of a building in Japan.
The Fujifilm relationship continues. He remains a firm advocate and continues to shoot exclusively on Fujifilm, not because of the relationship, but because, more than a decade in, it remains the right tool for the way he works.
— The education chapterSharing the approach behind the work.
Since 2018, Kevin has been teaching other photographers the documentary approach through workshops, live events, and an online course that now reaches photographers worldwide.
It's a natural extension of a career built without formal photography education: teaching the things he had to work out himself, in the way he wished they'd been explained to him.
The online course, The Art of Documentary Wedding Photography, covers everything from the philosophy behind the approach to specific techniques for light, composition, and working invisibly through a wedding day. Seven hours of content, drawn from 800+ weddings of real experience.
He has also spoken at major international photography conferences across the globe, from WPPI in Las Vegas to CP+ in Tokyo, from Gulf Photo Plus in Dubai to the FDF in Córdoba, Argentina.
He finds he learns as much from speaking as from photographing.
Photography remains his medium, his obsession, and, as he'd be the first to admit, frequently his teacher.
Invited to speak around the world.
In the past several years, Kevin has been invited to speak at many major photography conferences and festivals across the world.

Our children
— The personA few other things worth knowing.
Kevin grew up in Wales, which he brings up more often than is strictly necessary, but with genuine affection.
He now lives in Malmesbury with his family: Gemma, their two children, Rosa and Albie, two dogs named Breezie the Whippet and Monty the Border Terrier, and two ponies called Star and Hetty.
He has been a lifelong Johnny Cash fan, would prefer to watch a film in black-and-white if a colour version exists, and has a specific, inexplicable fear of toads that he has largely made peace with.
- Welsh. Grew up in Wales. Will inform you of this unprompted.
- Judo 1st Dan and Level 1 Coach at Cirencester Judo Club. Actively trains and competes.
- Former rugby player. London Welsh. Ask him to show you his picture of Barry John which comes with him everywhere.
- Hosts a music radio show - country, obviously. Available on Mixcloud.
- Has a strange fear of toads. This is well-documented and not up for discussion.
Gemma Mullins
Business administrator & studio coordinator
Kevin doesn't do any of this alone. Gemma manages the business behind the scenes. Coordinating shoots, handling enquiries, and generally keeping everything running. She has a strong creative background and is a talented painter, and if you've ever received a prompt or reply from the studio, there's a reasonable chance it was from her.
You can find her on Instagram.
