Wedding
Photography

A guided journey through the work.

Every wedding I've photographed has been different. Of course, different venues, very different people and different light.

But certain things recur: emotion, light, love, and joy. This page attempts to show you what I mean by those four things. Take your time.

All the smiles

Chapter I

Emotion

A bride and an older woman, possibly her mother, sharing a joyful moment at a wedding. The bride is wearing a lace wedding dress and veil, and the older woman is wearing a floral embroidered dress, both smiling and touching noses. Other women are in the background.
THE TENDERNESS OF A TOUCH

The images I remember most are rarely of the obvious moments.

The first kiss, yes, but also the many fathers who went completely still when they first saw their daughter. The grandmother who wanted to be the first to congratulate her granddaughter.

The groom, who couldn't hold it together during the speeches. Emotion can’t be planned. You wait for it, or more accurately, you stay ready while it finds you.

Chapter II

Light

A hairstylist sprays hair on a woman seated at a window, in black and white.
CREATIVE USE OF NATURAL LIGHT

I don't use flash. There is available light at every wedding: window light, candlelight, afternoon sun through a doorway, the glow from a marquee at dusk, and learning to find it and use it honestly is part of the job for a good documentary wedding photographer.

I don't want your overriding memory of your wedding to be spending hours with the photographer. I want it to be spending all your time with the people you love.

Chapter III

Quiet

A young child with light hair peeking out from behind an adult with a patterned sleeve in a blurred indoor setting, possibly a church or community hall, with other people in the background.
A MOMENT ALL TO HIMSELF

Weddings have a public story and a private one.

The public one is the ceremony, the speeches, and the first dance.

The private one happens around the edges of the day: the grandmother watching from a corner, the child who has long since lost interest in the aisle, the couple finding five minutes alone before the reception begins.

These photographs last the longest.

Chapter IV

Joy

Black and white photo of a bride and groom walking down the aisle of a church, surrounded by guests smiling and looking on. The church has tall, arched windows and ornate woodwork.
FATHER'S JOY OF WALKING HIS BRIDE DOWN THE AISLE

And then there is the sheer, beutiful happiness of a wedding. The kind that needs no real explanation, and the pictures do all the talking.

You cannot ask someone to laugh like that. You wait, you anticipate, and you press the shutter.
