Get comfortable with the camera in your hands
You bought your Fujifilm camera because you wanted to make photographs. Then came the dials, the menus and a surprising number of ways to change how it behaves. It is quite possible to enjoy the pictures while still feeling unsure about the camera that made them.
Perhaps you leave most things on automatic, struggle to find a setting you used yesterday or have watched several tutorials that recommend different setups. Those are useful starting points for this course. You do not need to understand the terminology before you arrive.
During this three-hour session, we’ll work through the controls and decisions that help you begin. I’ll explain what they do, show you on your camera and give you time to try them, with questions welcome throughout.
Understanding a few useful controls can make picking up your camera feel much easier.

We begin with the cameras in the group and what each person finds confusing. It might be a focus setting, the exposure dials or simply knowing where to start.

I’ll explain the useful settings in plain language and help you find them on your own camera. We’ll look at why you might choose one option over another.
Learn what a setting is forPut the ideas into practice
You’ll try the controls and see how changing a setting affects a photograph. There is time to ask again, check your understanding and work through anything that has not quite clicked.

What aperture, shutter speed and ISO do, and how they work together to affect brightness, movement and the look of a photograph.
Shooting modes
How the camera’s automatic and manual controls fit together, and a sensible starting point for the photographs you want to make.

How to choose where the camera focuses. We’ll also look at back-button focus, what it is for and whether it suits the way you photograph.
Menus & shortcuts
Finding the settings you need and understanding the available quick-access controls, function buttons and practical shortcuts.
A useful personal setup
Making commonly used controls easier to reach and understanding custom settings where your camera provides them.
Film simulations
What the film simulation choices are for, where to find them and how to begin exploring different colour and monochrome looks.

Meet, introduce your camera and ask your questions
We meet in London’s West End at 10am. We’ll discuss the models in the group, your experience and what you would most like help with. The exact meeting point is sent before the session.

We’ll work through exposure, camera modes and focusing, relating the explanations to what you can see on your camera and in your photographs.

Find your way around the camera
We’ll explore the menus, available shortcuts, custom options and film simulations. The aim is a setup you understand and can find your way around afterwards.

Try the settings and check what happens
Practical examples give you time to use what we have discussed. Change a setting, look at the result and ask for help if it behaves differently from what you expected.

Before we finish at 1pm, there is time for final questions and checking the settings you want to keep using. You can leave with a clearer idea of what to practise next.

Both are welcome. You might have your first camera, be returning to photography or have years of experience with another brand. This course starts with the fundamentals and helps you find your way around Fujifilm.

Learn with Kevin
I’m Kevin Mullins, a documentary photographer and educator, and one of the first official Fujifilm X-Photographers in the UK. I use Fujifilm cameras professionally and have taught and spoken at Fujifilm events in the UK and internationally.
That experience is useful here because I can explain the settings in the context of actually making photographs. We’ll work with the controls on your model and talk about which choices might help with the things you want to photograph.
My role is to make those first steps easier. You can ask about something you have never understood, try it on your camera and ask again if you need to. You do not have to arrive knowing the right words for it.
Your £75 place includes the complete three-hour session, practical demonstrations and guidance on your own camera. Bring the questions that have been getting in the way and we’ll work through them together.

I gained a much greater understanding of my camera settings and functions and with a maximum number of just five attendees, there was plenty of opportunity for individual questions and attention. Another few very worthwhile hours spent with an understated man with an encyclopedic knowledge of all things Fuji. No question is a stupid question with Kevin. I have also always found his general attitude to photography exceptionally refreshing. I leave his workshop much better informed and always inspired and never scared or intimated which a lot of pro photographers have a tendency to do with novices like me. I saw Kevin for the first time back a year ago at one of the Photography Show’s lectures and he opened my eyes to a new style of photography and of course to the world of Fuji.
