Documentary Wedding in Wicklow, Ireland

Owen and Deirdre asked me to photograph their wedding at the lovely Trudder Lodge in Country Wicklow.

Owen was an old rugby pal of mine back at London Welsh, and he was marrying his lovely bride, Deirdre, in her hometown church in Newcastle, County Wicklow. As you may imagine, there aren't too many documentary wedding photographers in Ireland, and this led Owen to contact me regarding his wedding.

They didn't want the more traditional style wedding photographer, and they also didn't want a "pretend documentary wedding photographer" - one that tells the clients they are shooting authentic documentary style, and then spends all day setting up shots.

They wanted somebody, like me, to navigate the intricacies of their lovely wedding day with a sympathetic eye to real story unfolding, but at the same time, allowing them to do the most important thing to them - enjoy their day, and not worry about anything else - including the photography.

I started my day at the local hair salon where the girls were getting ready, before heading off to the pub, where the boys were (obviously) having a pint of Guinness and meeting their guests. I could tell immediately, this was going to be a great wedding and as I've photographed several Irish Weddings in the past, I kind of knew what to expect for the rest of the day. I knew there would be Guinness, fun, laughter, love, and probably a fiddle player too.

The Newcastle Church is a beautiful Church of Ireland church set atop a little hilltop.

Once the ceremony had been conducted (complete with a mix of Welsh and Irish music, of course), we headed outside where the weather took a turn for the worse. Not to worry though, a quick burst of confetti, a slug of champagne and once we got to Trudder Lodge, the sun was out shining once more.

An adorable wedding, a charming couple - lot's of fun and I'm looking forward to my next Documentary Wedding Photographer Ireland commission which is later this year in Cork.
