Linda & John – A Quiet Kind of Celebration
Some sessions stay with you for reasons you can’t quite pin down. This was one of those.
Linda got in touch about a family shoot to mark her birthday. Nothing elaborate, no big production. Just a quiet gathering at home with the people who mattered most. But from the start, it felt like something more than that.
Now, Linda isn’t just anyone reaching out about a birthday. Years ago, she worked as an assistant to the great David Hurn on the celebrated Documentary Photography course at Newport College. And, actually, it was David himself who pointed her in my direction. She told me he’d said, “Possibly the most beautiful Wedding Photography I have ever seen.” I don’t bring that up to be self-congratulatory, honestly, I nearly fell off my chair when I heard it.
But it does add a certain weight to the session. A quiet sense of responsibility, perhaps.
John, her husband, is a professional musician. You can tell. He has that thoughtful presence, a certain stillness. The kind of calm that seems to notice things others miss.
We weren’t going for anything styled or posed. It was a case of turn up, watch, wait.
Respond gently to what’s already there. And that, really, is where I feel most at home. Observing moments. Not shaping them.
