A Family Photoshoot in London

Documentary Family Photoshoot in London

2023 has been a busy year for me, not only shooting Weddings but also Family Day-in-the-Life sessions. I love these types of sessions, and am sharing a few photos from a recent shoot in London. As is often the case, I photographed Mum and Dads Wedding a few years ago and its always lovely to catch up with past clients in such a lovely way.

As a documentary family photographer, my approach to capturing family life differs from traditional portraiture. I aim to capture natural, unposed moments, recording the family’s life exactly as it is. This means no staging or directing from me, just pure, candid moments.

During a photoshoot, I usually find myself in the family's everyday surroundings, be it their home, a local park, or any other space where they share significant moments. I strive to be as unobtrusive as possible, like a fly on the wall, quietly observing and capturing natural occurrences. This style is about storytelling, preserving genuine memories and the essence of what makes each family unique.

My photographs are authentic and candid, often highlighting interactions, emotions, and family dynamics. They could range from capturing simple routine activities like cooking and playing to moments of unfiltered chaos and tranquillity. I aim to portray the essence of the family's relationships and individual personalities more profoundly and meaningfully.

Many families are drawn to this style of photography because it values heartfelt moments over posed, picture-perfect shots. It's like creating a time capsule, not just to remember how the family looked at a specific moment in time, but more importantly, how life felt. These photographs encompass a broad spectrum of emotions and situations, offering a more comprehensive and authentic portrayal of family life.

Much like my Documentary Wedding Photography, I find this type of photoshoot particularly rewarding. Families can relax without the pressure of posing, which is especially beneficial for children who might not always cooperate with directed shoots. My skill lies in anticipating and capturing fleeting moments, understanding each family's unique dynamics, and being present yet unnoticeable, capturing the beauty of everyday life.
