West London Family Photo Session

A mother holds her young son at a documentary family photography session

I photographed this family's wedding a good few years ago now, and a couple of weeks back I spent a morning with them again in West London, doing something quite different. This time, it was another day-in-the-life session.

I’ve been back to photograph the family with the two-hour family photo session option several times over the last few years, and it’s a delight to see the family grow.

The short version

  • A day in the life session is documentary photography of your family doing ordinary, everyday things, with no posing.
  • This one lasted around two hours and took place at home.
  • You do not need to plan anything special. The point is to capture a normal day as it actually is.
  • It suits families with young children especially well, because it works with their energy.

What is a day-in-the-life photography session?

A day-in-the-life session is a documentary photography session where the photographer records your family doing everyday things, rather than posing for set-up portraits.

There is no list of shots to get through, no props, no "hold hands and walk towards me". Instead I turn up, let everyone settle, and then more or less disappear into the background while life carries on.

I work this way for family photography for the same reason I have always worked this way at weddings. The real moments are more interesting than anything I could direct, and they tend to age far better too.

If you want the longer thinking behind that, I have written separately about photographing the ordinary moments that most people overlook.

family session?

Sessions start from £450 for two hours. The Family Year from £1,500. Book directly through the scheduling page, or get in touch if you'd like to talk through which session is right for you.
