Natural Child Photography: Image of the Week #9

Back Story:

As you know, I’m a fan of documentary photography.  Although I have a studio, and shoot studio posed work, my primary passion is the documentary or candid image.  This means I’m a big fan of natural child photography too.

This is an image of  our new son Albie, taken with the Fuji Finepix X100 on the day he turned five months old.  We were at my parents and Albie was sat in the leather arm chair normally reserved for Grampy and the Sky controller.  I could see him chuckling away to himself (Albie, not Grampy!) and quickly raised the X100 to my eye and shot this image.  I love it of course, because its my son primarily but I’m also proud of it as a true un-staged, unprompted moment in my young sons life captured forever.

Processing:

This image has gone through my standard pre-edit procedure.  Image correction in Lightroom and cropping.  The image has been cropped into a vertical plane from a horizontal.  I have subsequently added noise as I do to most of my images and added a bit of vibrancy too.

I nearly always shoot my X100 with the Black and White Film emulation turned on (R).  This lets me know instantly if an image is going to work organically in black and white – and for this photograph of Albie it did just that.  To the left of Albie is a big window that was drenching him in glorious late afternoon sun.  The image was shot on the 1st October which was 29 degrees believe it or not in South Wales.

For this particular image, I used Nik Silver Efex Pro 2.0 which is a tool I use occasionally for personal work (I don’t find it offers me what I want for my wedding work).  I’ve corrected a couple of light spots and added one of the built-in borders.  Finally, a stronger than normal sepia tone has been added which I think works quite well with the old style border.
