The Decisive Moment (part two): Image of the Week #13

Back Story:
This photograph was a snap image taken at a Kingscote Barn Wedding last year. Its a very simple photograph, but perhaps one of my favourites from last year.  There are two stories going on in the frame; the grand father and the little girl of course is the primary thread, and then the guests at the back taking shots.  This image is important to me because it encapsulates really everything that I try to do on a wedding day.  Capture the emotion and interaction.

If I had been shooting as a “traditional wedding photographer” (nothing wrong with those of course – some of my best friends in the industry are) I perhaps would not have captured the moment.  The chaps in the background are taking shots of the bride and groom who are posing off camera for their friends.  Whilst this is going on I always take note of stuff that is happening in the periphery of the scene – and usually its the more emotive and exciting images that are being created there.

We take images as we see them, and this image to me was right in front of me as I looked around.  I could not tell how long this interaction would go on so I had to shoot it while it was on going.  In hindsight, I could have moved back and got the whole of the bodies in frame, perhaps far enough back to even have the bride and groom in shot.  However, as a reportage wedding photographer you think on your feet – and the shot was a now or never shot.  This was it.  In hindsight I know if I had taken time to move back, the shot would have been lost because the grand father and little girl stopped playing together at that point.

As usual, the image has been processed in Lightroom for image correction.  The slanting horizon is correct, that’s the lay of the land at Kingscote Barn.  The Black and White with slight warmth tone has been added in Photoshop.
