South Wales Wedding Photographer
Claire and Ian asked me to photograph their wedding whilst at the wedding of Ian and Caroline the previous year. I know Claire and Ian well. I played rugby with Ian for a long time and I have some very good memories of times spent with on (and off) the field during our time at London Welsh together. They got married at the lovely Oldwalls wedding venue on the Gower peninsula. It had been a little while since I’d been a South Wales wedding photographer but I was glad to be back in the beautiful part of the country.
Whilst Oldwalls is a wonderful place for a wedding, sadly the registrars on the day had a very firm hold over me and I was allowed to take just one photograph during the ceremony. This saddens me. I’m as unobtrusive as physically possible, without using flash or moving around – but still, rules are rules.
Another sad sight on the day was the rain – although that did not dampen the spirits of the wedding party in any way shape or form. Of course, I knew many of the guests. In fact, I’d photographed four couples weddings who were there. The afternoon rolled into an early evening wedding breakfast with what I can only describe as a very “special” set of speeches. The words from Claire’s lovely dad were tear jerking for everybody there and the three follow up speeches from Ian and his best men had everybody reaching for their hankies and bellowing with laughter.
It was a wonderful wonderful wedding, and Ian and Claire are a truly wonderful couple. Judging by the last few shots, I’m fairly sure Claire is very happy.
As always, a small selection of my favourite images from the day. Guests at the wedding can see the full gallery here.

Gorgeous as always Kevin. The colour shots in the marquee are great and you’ve captured some real ‘moments’ of emotion and facial expressions.
Swing low, Paul.
Great job as always Kevin!
Love the speech images Kevin -
I agree about the colours in the marquee, they’ve come out beautifully. How sad that you weren’t allowed to take more photos during the ceremony. I’d have something to say about that if I was the bride. Lol.
Love the speeches, fantastic coverage, some really great moments captured
Shame about the registrar’s attitude on the day. With all that glass I think I would have been tempted to take a few frames looking in from the outside! Would have obviously had the best angle & correct side for the registrar ( back of head )! Shame for the couple but great set of images delivered Kevin.
Hmm registrars eh?
Alternatively a Sony NEX on a tripod at the back with an infra-red release is pretty stealthy!
Had a similar situation with registrars once. “Only one picture during the ceremony” they said. “Are the guests allowed to take pictures?” I said. “Yes” they said “The guests cameras don’t make so much noise as the big professional ones.” they added. “Okay” I said, and promptly changed my shirt (always have a spare shirt) and joined the guest with an X100. Wasn’t perfect, but got a good few ‘guests eye view’ shots!
Nothing is lacking.
Well done Kevin, one of my favourites from you I think.
Love your work as always. The toning really makes your images stand out. Great images at the speeches. Makes me angry to read only one image was allowed at the ceremony though.
Can tell you enjoyed this one Kevin, some fabulous stuff, truly fabulous. Chap rubbing his eye in the speech, glorious, the cake shot with rain in full force behind, great eye. Funnily enough as Steve Causon pointed out the X100 is a good stealth weapon for over zealous registrars. In silent mode could this be triggered too? Have you tried that Kev? Neale
I know where you are coming from Neale, Steve and Linus. However, the registrar made it clear that they operate a photographer “ban list”…… and I don’t intend to break rules in those situations.
Ha, just tell em your name’s Gerry Gihonis…
What! They have a ‘Photographer Ban List’, – That’s terrible! – At least critique their photographs first, for goodness sake.
Only just come across this wedding, and really like it. While your monochrome work always stands out, what I really like in this post is the colour work. Great tones – they just work really well.
Some interesting comments about registrars. How bizarre that the professionals are curtailed, but amateurs given free rein. Have to say that in Cheshire the registrars are universally helpful, their line being “we’ve all got a job to do, let’s help each other to do it”. Really sorry that you faced such restrictions.
