Negative Space: Image of the Week #10
Back Story:
The image in this post is from a wedding I did at Slebech Park earlier this year. The day was pretty horrid in terms of the weather, and, although Slebech is a wonderful place for a wedding – on a rainy day the options are restricted to a few [lovely] rooms in the main building itself.
During the drinks reception I was wandering around taking record images of the events unfolding. There was a lot going on in terms of interaction from the guests, but the room was void of any useful peripheral items to utilise in the frame. I’m a fan of negative space when it adds to the image and to aid the image in this case I think it does. The story is still there of course – and the story is the interaction between the guests. I think a closer crop in this scene would have been overkill and the added depth from above aids the composition.
Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Shutter: 1/60th Second
Aperture: f/1.4
ISO: 8000
Flash: Did not fire
Lens: Canon EF 35mm F/1.4
Focal Length: 35mm
Processing:
This image has gone through my standard pre-edit procedure. Image correction in Lightroom and slight cropping. I have subsequently added noise as I do to most of my images and added a bit of vibrancy too. I have removed some small artefacts from the wall behind and lightened it ever so slightly in Photoshop.

Really interesting composition, it works really well with the five heads at the base of the shot. I’m drawn across to the guy on the right, his half hidden face is mesmerising!
Big fan of neg space too as you know… love this. The depth is spot on for me.
