Formal Groups?: Image of the Week #19
Back Story: Formal Groups? This photograph was taken at a Malmesbury Abbey House Gardens Wedding last summer. It was shot before the bride arrived down from the preparation room and the three boys in the image were being lined up for an impromptu ”formal” shot by another member of the wedding party. Of course, it would be a lovely image, but it’s not really in my working ethos to set up these kinds of things. I prefer to hang around on the sidelines and observe when these situations unfold.
Whilst there is an element of putting myself in the right place at the right time, there was no what I could anticipate the little lad pulling the face he did. With documentary wedding photography there is a huge amount of luck involved. Yes, you can make you own luck sometimes, but there is no way I would prompt the little lad to do anything like this. He did it. I was lucky I photographed it. Simple as that really.
It makes me smile every time I see it. I think he has the same opinion as me on formal photography at weddings…..

As usual I’ve added my standard black and white processing and vignette. There is a substantial amount of light coming from the window to the front of the subjects, and in hindsight, perhaps the other two characters in the frame are a little bright. I’ve cropped the shot in from the bottom left where the top part of an ornament was showing.

Awesome. I guess you must have had the camera up to eye already? I doubt there would have been time to raise the camera, focus and compose before the moment was gone? Or maybe you are way way quicker than I!
