The Delivery: Image of the Week #16
Back Story:
I have been using the Fujifilm X-Pro1 at a lot of weddings recently and this is the first image from that camera to be featured on my Image of the Week page. I have recently completed a review of the camera from a wedding photographers point of view for Professional Photographer magazine. The review is in the June 2012 issue and as of today I believe is in the shops. I go into a lot of detail about the camera and how I found it for wedding photography.
The featured image here was actually shot at yesterdays wedding in Clearwell Castle. I don’t normally dip into editing weddings straight away but I really wanted to see how this image panned out (‘scuse the pun). I had been waiting for the speeches to start and noticed the procession of dinner staff bringing in the desert. As a documentary photographer, every aspect of a wedding that could be deemed “part of the story” is potentially an image so I wanted to capture it. What interested me the most was the movement of the girls delivering the food. I could have shot this image using a fast shutter speed and got a fairly dull image but wanted to get that movement captured.
In order to do this I needed to slow the shutter right down, and to try and get the girl in focus I needed to pan with her as she moved passed me.
Camera: Fujifilm X-Pro1
Lens: XF18mm F2
Shutter: 1/15th Second
Aperture: f/2.0
ISO: 640
Flash: Did not fire
Processing:
My standard Black and White with a small amount of grain added. The vignette was added after the warm tone. No cropping. The image is sharp on the girl and blurred in the background via in camera techniques. The image has been produced from a JPG using the Velvia emulation in the camera. At the time of writing this, Lightroom still does not support RAW files from the Fuji X-Pro1.

You are teasing us with this camera Kevin!
I love shots that have movement in them and this is a fine example. Did you have continuous focus on?
Thanks Karen. No, single shot mode. Focus and pan with the subject (whist holding all bellies in and not breathing
)
Great shot Kevin. I’m considering switching to primes (help with combating bad tennis elbow). Did it take long to adapt to working with primes? I guess anticipation is key, rather than just zooming in on the action?
Love the post by the way.
Regards
Steve
Thanks Steve. I’ve been shooting with just primes on my DSLRs for the last two years so the principles are the same. Keeps me on my feet
Will be out tomorrow to get my copy of Professional Photographer and to read your full review – but after reading your previous posts and seeing the images I couldn’t wait any longer and my X Pro 1 arrived 2 days ago. Keep up the great work Kevin found your site by pure chance whilst hunting for info on the Fuji, but I visit back regularly to catch your updates
Nice one Steve. This months magazine is brilliant….lots of great articles in there.
Hi Kevin ! just bought the June addition of professional Photographer,to catch your article regarding the fuji X-Pro-1 as i had read your article about the Fuji X100, i purchased one two days ago ,and i have to say i have fell in love with it already. its beautiful to own.
Do you still have the article on the X100 ? if so, would it be possible to email it me a copy as it was your enthusiasm that prompted me to go ahead a buy the camera….. talk about technology moving on you say you will probably keep your X100 as you also have grown fond of your camera.
I use the Cannon 5DMK11 which i have loved as a main camera ,do you think it’s the slow decline for the DSLR ?
Best Regards
Colin ……. sorry if i got a bit carried away
Hi Colin,
Thanks for the message. I didn’t do a review of the X100 for Professional Photographer magazine. I did do a couple of articles for WEX though and you can see them here:

and

Enjoy the X100 – its an awesome camera.
Thanks Kevin , i have read the Wex review really enjoyed it , it’s made feel even better about the camera [Fuji X100]i love the monochrome images, the only thing i’m wary of is the firmware updates . i have read different articles, people saying, their camera’s had locked up and i don’t want that to happen to mine , but thats probably me being over cautious, as i’m enjoying the little beauty , i’ve just got to be brave one day and do it. Bye the way i love that picture of the lady with the blurred background at first i thought my eyes were going funny.
Best Regards

Hi Colin,
I had my X100 right at the start and never had lockups. The firmware updates have been great.
Cheers
Kevin
Kevin
Love this photo – it has a real edge to it
I am toying of going for the Fuji X-Pro 1 too it just appeals to me really having such a compact system.
I love my X100 it gets used more than my 5D and at weddings it was superb during bridal preps.
Should I sell my Canon stuff I wonder and switch completely?
Hmmmmmmmmm
I love my x-pro1 and now use it more than my 5d2 due to its small size. Do you not have problems with auto focus though in low light at weddings? Loving your work, must try to get a copy of your fuji review.
It really depends on the contrast available. I don’t think it’s as good in low light as my 5D Mark 3, but it’s on a par with my 5D Mark 2.
