Bristol v Cornish Pirates Play off Semi-Final
This afternoon I was lucky enough to get pitchside to photograph the RFU Rugby Championship Semi-Final Second Leg play off between Bristol Rugby and Cornish Pirates. I’m a big Bristol Rugby fan these days – especially as they are so close to my home.
Bristol were carrying a 21 point deficit into this match but I felt fairly confident that they could turn it around. Sadly, it wasn’t to be and although Bristol beat Cornish Pirates 29-15 today, it wasn’t enough on aggregate and The Pirates are the team to progress to the final.
It was a balmy afternoon at The Memorial Stadium with beautiful sunshine and an 8,000 capacity crowd promising a fast, free flowing running game of rugby. This was duly delivered, though sadly for Bristol, by both teams. Cornish Pirates had brought a strong travelling support and they were delighted at the end when they held on to reach the final. It was a deserved win for The Pirates, they are an excellent rugby team.
As the final whistle blew, it was jubilation for the Cornish Pirates players and fans, and despondency for the Bristol Rugby players and fans.
In the other semi-final, the club I used to play for, London Welsh did progress to the final and I wish them all the very best in their attempt to reach the Premiership next season.
Below are a selection of some of my favourites images from the match. I don’t shoot sports professionally so get a chance to apply my filmatic styles to the images. Fantastic action shots Kev. Nice to see some drama in this type of shot instead on the cleanliness of a newsrag edition.
Cheers Tom – it was a great game to be at.
Cool images Kevin. I started out all those years ago doing sports photography but once I sold my motor cross bike for a Hasselblad I never went back unfortunately. I love these images though & you can see your passion for this sport. You get the shots just at the right times and the expressions you have captured are fantastic and make me smile.
Thanks Tina – it was a great game to shoot.
Love the desolation shot right at the tail end, really does tell a tale. Guy in the line out shouting too, really good honest stuff, that I agree with Tom doesn’t make the ‘newsrag’ coverage.
Lovely artistic images Kevin. You must be using very fast glass and shooting wide open for most of the match??? I’m with Tom above……so different from the usual magazine shots
Thanks David. I think pretty much all of these were shot wide open on the 135 F2 L Canon lens.
Thanks Kevin. I was very interested in your approach and in particular, you choice of focal length and f stop. I had an idea you were shooting wider than f2.8. Lovely to see sports shot a f2. The effects are wonderful and work so well in my eyes. Thanks for sharing the images. I’ll be back
David in Ireland. (Come on Leinster)
