Black and White Sports Photography
Black and White Sports Photography: A quick post today about this image which was given a Highly Commended by the SWPP in the monthly sports category for May 2012.
The photo was taken during the Bristol Rugby game is shot earlier in the year. I tend to shoot my rugby photography a bit wider than what you would perhaps expect to see in a newspaper or a magazine (my sports photography is purely for my own relaxation and not a commercial exercise). Quite often I’ll try and get a whole scene into a frame rather than a close crop “action” shot.
I really liked the picture below – there is a lot of action going on right across the pitch and the animated faces of the players tell you a lot about the game itself. My original series of images was in colour but I gave the old film emulation black and white editing a go for this particular image and I really like it. I think the colours of the players shirts help a little with the black and white.
For the photographers out there, this photograph was taken, believe it or not, not on my 1D Mark IV but on a 5D Mark III and with a 135 F/2 lens to boot.

This is an excellent photograph – love the way it’s wider than the usual sports images you see. You really get the pace and action of the match. Nice work.
Great shot, it must have been a buzz to shoot your favourite sport.
It’s always fun
Shooting sports wide open is so different. Makes me stop in my tracks an look longer. Wonderful Kevin.
Nice capture. Not very surprised by the camera/lens you used though. The Canon 5D II/III + 135/2L is one of the best photographic combinations every made IMHO.
Great shot, nice editing too. I’m off to photograph Connacht rugby club vs Ulster tonight, will hopefully get a few 1/2 as good as above.
