Wedding Photojournalism SWPP Gold Award
Each month the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers have an award competition. This month I’m very pleased that the image below was awarded a Gold in the Wedding Photojournalism category.
The image is from Suzanne and James wedding at Orchardleigh House earlier in May. I haven’t even blogged that wedding yet but hopefully the image below will whet your appetite.
As a reportage wedding photographer I am constantly seeking out those little moments in the wedding day that appeal to me from the most basic of levels – emotion. I was sat on a stool watching the receiving line unfold in (in the background) and the lady pictured just came up next to me and started combing her hair before going into the wedding breakfast.
I didn’t even have to move. I raised the camera took two exposures and dropped it again. It was only when I edited the wedding did I think about the image in more detail. To me, it tells a complete story about the importance of the lady to Suzanne and James and also how important the wedding is to the lady too.

Congratulations on the award and thank you (and thank lady) for making me cry! Beautiful pic, beautifully explained.
A perfect shot, love all the action in the background contrasted against the lady in her own world

Glad to read that SWPP final figured out what we all already know. Well deserved Kevin.
Hey Kevin, Love this shot, it works well in colour too, so glad you didn’t convert to black and white. Congrats on the gold award
